Every tipping point in the long arc of history of thoughtful, committed citizens changing the world for the better always involves leadership. Yet history also tells us time again that even the most formidable leaders, from King Saul in the kingdom of Israel to Enron executives in corporate America, are prone to derailment and failures. Contrary to the popular idea that leaders need to enhance their self-efficacy to be effective, the focus of self is misguided because the self is the epicentre of the leadership problem. The most fundamental reason why leaders are blinded by power and control, create their own performance treadmill, live for other people’s approval, and have myopic ambition for things of this world is their preoccupation with self and unbelief in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

This talk presents the gospel as a sensemaking paradigm to critically examine five areas of personal leadership effectiveness, namely desire, identity, dignity, motive, ambition. Drawing on biblical insights and scholarly research, the talk will outline key leadership principles and practices that will equip both novice and seasoned leaders to begin and end well in the VUCA world we live in. The talk is based on a new book by the speaker entitled Leadership Reformed: Why Christian Leaders Need the Gospel to Change the World (http://bit.ly/LRSENDJAYA), which will be available for purchase and signing on the day.
