Best Christian Workplaces

Is YOUR Church or ministry a 'Best Christian Workplace'?
CMA is partnering with the Best Christian Workplaces Institute (BCWI) to bring their ministry workplace surveys and certification to Australia. BCWI has been operating for a number of years in the USA, and in the last couple of years, Canada has also participated. Now, Australian ministries can also be involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What Is the BCWI Survey All About?
The BCWI has produced a detailed workplace survey, specifically tailored to Christian organisations. It's contains 60+ standard questions, plus up to five of your own. Your staff each fill out the online survey, anonymously, and the results are collated into reports which help your organisation understand different aspects of your organisation's culture - and what may need improving!

2. Who Can Participate? When?
Participation is open to churches and organisations with a Christian mission or purpose, with ten or more staff. Although you may participate at any time, we strongly encourage you to get involved in the April / May survey batch, which means you'll be better able to benchmark against other organisations, and you'll be included in CMA's initial round of awards and benchmarking in the lead-up to our June conference.

3. What Does My Organisation Get Out Of It?
Participating organisations are able to diagnose and thus improve the health of their workplace culture. The organisation receives a detailed Summary Report and a detailed Benchmark Report, including many charts and graphs. A one-hour debriefing / coaching phone conversation is also offered, to help you further interpret your results, and to identify measures to improve any weaknesses revealed. Participants are able to benchmark themselves against similar organisations, and are rewarded with 'Best Christian Workplace Certification' if they meet a pre-defined standard of excellence. CMA will use our annual conference each year, and accompanying Press Releases, to announce those organisations that have achieved certification.

4. Is It Credible?
Yes. BCWI has been operating in the USA since 2002, and has surveyed tens of thousands of Christian employees. BCWI each year presents awards at the Christian Leadership Alliance conference, and has been frequently written up in Christianity Today. Many of the most highly respected Christian organisations in the USA and Canada repeat the survey each year, because it gives them valuable insight into the perceptions of their staff, and because it helps them create more God-centred working environments.

5. How Much Does it Cost?
The cost to participate is US$495, plus $1.50 per employee. CMA Organisational Members receive a 10% discount off this price. This cost includes the two reports and one-hour phone consultation described above. Additional reports and departmental breakdowns are available for further costs. See http://www.bcwinstitute.com/surveys/AUgeneral.aspx for full details.

6. This is USA-Based - Does it Translate to Australia?
Yes. Australian organisations are already participating, and because the survey has been designed to incorporate Canada, and now Australia, the questions are universal enough to have meaning internationally. Out of the 60+ questions, only one, possibly two, (relating to health insurance / retirement benefits) are not directly meaningful in Australia. And when more than 20 Australian organisations participate, our agreement means that the researchers will create reports and comparisons for us based on the Australian data.

7. How Do I Proceed?
You can sign up today - others already have. BCWI have created an Australian entry point and sign-up page, and you can get started immediately by visiting https://www.bwinstitute.com/Registration/regForm.aspx?SurID=41

8. Where Can I Get More Information?

We encourage you to take a detailed look at the BCWI website at www.bcwinstitute.com where you can find resources, descriptions and other survey products.

You may also call the CMA office at 07 5545 2004 for any questions.

Why is CMA Interested?

Whenever CMA surveys its members about the challenges of organisational leadership and management, the most common issue to emerge is usually related to ministry staffing.

Christian workplaces should be the most fulfilling places to turn up each day - but they're often not.

It's rarely because of outright exploitation, or deliberate bad behaviour. It's often because ministry leaders, so intent on pursuing the critical mission that God has placed before them, overlook some seemingly small things. These small things seem unimportant initially, but if neglected they eventually contribute to the creation of a workplace environment that is at best less than effective, and at worst, dysfunctional.

Christian ministries operate according to some unique principles, different even to the wider non-profit sector. This makes our organisations very challenging - and the Best Christian Workplaces Institute does the best work we've seen anywhere, in assisting Christian organisations to identify and resolve the problems.

We like it for several reasons:

1. It's Christian - not just business or nonprofit.

2. The certification process rewards those who do well - it creates an incentive to reach a certain standard.

3. Experience shows that it actually does help the organisations who participate!

4. The collective learning that comes from the process gives us real information about what ministries should be paying attention to.

5. The price is accessible for Christian organisations - far less than many business-oriented commercial products.

6. The whole process raises the bar generally - and helps to make people aware that they CAN influence the type of workplaces they are creating - and make them truly 'Christian'.

We invite you to participate and help improve Australia's Christian workplaces.
