CMA's Essential Standards for Church Workplaces

and

CMA's Essential Standards for Christian Workplaces

Hot off the press is the third booklet in CMA's Principles and Standards series. This publication is available in two versions: one for churches, the other for Christian schools and other ministries. (Note: the principles and standards in the two publications are identical, the church version just uses some different terminology at times).

The booklets address the HR issues for Christian organisations, in the familiar dot-point format of our original Governance publication. With 12 Principles, and 104 standards, CMA hopes that churches and Christian organisations will find this a helpful tool for stimulating thinking about what makes a great workplace.

Endorsements

"Leaders of organisations who work from a Christian and faith based foundation often find themselves in a difficult space. They experience the tension between functioning as a corporate organization or as a Christian ministry with God honouring ethics. "CMA’s Essential Standards for Christian Workplaces" demonstrates that this is a fallacy. You can function with clear leadership, good governance, law abiding standards and Christian ethics, and this publication articulates the parameters. I recommend this short and helpful document to every Christian organisation”"
Karl Faase, Senior Pastor Gymea Baptist Church, & CEO, Olive Tree Media

"In my roles as legal advisor to and board member of charitable and not-for-profit organisations, I have become convinced of the importance of identity and purpose in the day-to-day operations of such organisations. This is particularly true for those that are Christian. The issues canvassed in the CMA Essential Standards for Christian Workplaces are an important contribution to the conversation about how Christian organisations can ensure that their Christian identity and purpose remain the rudder which sets the direction for their activities and the tone of their conduct."
Anne Robinson, Director, Prolegis Lawyers, & Co-author of ‘Driven by Purpose: Charities That Make the Difference’, Hammond Press (May 2012)

"St Francis of Assisi is quoted as saying “Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words”. If Christian organisations put these CMA essential workplace standards into practice, our workplaces will speak for themselves as places where people flourish and serve, and where work has the opportunity to provide fulfillment as well as provision. They are a strong foundation for any business which truly believes that its people are its greatest asset."
Karen Naylor HR Manager – CityLife Church

"CMAs Workplace Principles and Standards are an excellent starting point for organisations to encourage, enrich and invigorate a workplace culture that is both professional and an expression of their Christian identity."
John Jeffries National Director, cbm Australia

"Whilst most would agree that God has called us to be good stewards, stewardship is often attributed to the giving of or management of money. But it is so much more. Stewardship comes from the Greek word oikenomous, which means somebody who manages every aspect of the household. These CMA principles and standards act as a reference point and guide to stewarding processes and practices in support of the most fundamentally important aspect of all organisations; our people. A must resource for anyone involved or interested in building strong workplace cultures."
Jen Mundt, Director of People Services, SU QLD

“This is an excellent guide for our Christian NFP sector. It provides our Christian leadership with clarity to recruit competent teams and to ensure that they not only go to peak performance but that there is alignment to mission and values. It can be incorporated into Performance Appraisals as a good measure of what is expected in an organisation that upholds the Gospel and Kingdom values.”
Judy Wong-See Principal, Credence International

"Christian organisation are increasingly challenged by the same Human Resources issues as organisations in other sectors – an aging workforce, attracting talent and rising skills requirements. However many boards and managers lack the skills and resources to address these challenges. This publication provides a transparent and detailed list of HR standards recommended for Christian organisations. These can be used to evaluate your current HR practices and assist you in discussing your HR needs, taking corrective action and designing HR policy and procedures. Rarely do you find key HR standards documented in a helpful and accessible guide for a sector and I encourage you to work through this publication pragmatically choosing a few priority areas to tackle one at a time."
Tania Hannath, Director, People Axis

Introduction to CMA's Workplace Standards

Being a staff or volunteer worker in a Christian church, school or ministry is a wonderful privilege, and should be incredibly fulfilling. For many people it is, but for many, it isn’t. Why does it sometimes end in pain, or frustration? How can your ministry give your team the best chance of success? If your staff doesn’t include a HR professional, how can you navigate challenges like recruitment, legal compliance and appropriate remuneration?
