Being a board or council member of a local church, or a Christian school, or a Christian mission or ministry, comes with wonderful opportunities, and serious responsibilities. In fact, in order to maintain your charitable tax status, the ACNC governance standards require that most organisations make sure that your board / council members understand and follow their legal duties.

But governance not just about obligations. Those in the boardroom have more opportunity than anyone else to steer the ministry towards its mission! It's a tremendous privilege, but poor governance can seriously hamper your efforts to achieve something for God's kingdom.

CMA's Ministry Governance Conference, in just one day, will provide valuable professional development for board members and executive staff members of Christian churches, schools and ministries. Featuring plenary sessions, plenary panel discussions, and two parallel tracks of electives throughout the day, you will cover topics such as:

  • The Spiritual basis of ministry governance
  • Current issues and trends in the Australian NFP sector
  • Hypotheticals. A panel of ministry governance experts addressing three hypothetical issues that ministries regularly face
  • Closing plenary panel: Your questions answered.

The Essentials

  • Understanding and meeting your ACNC obligations, and your duties as a not-for-profit board member
  • Understanding NFP financial statements, and the audit / review cycle
  • Identifying and managing the risks your ministry faces
  • Getting un-muddled: clarifying board / staff / committee roles, developing and actioning board policy, building agendas, running meetings, effective governance disciplines

Other Electives

  • The board building cycle: composition, recruitment, assessment, succession
  • Why reputation and culture are the purview of the board
  • The board's role in setting and monitoring mission and strategy
  • The board / CEO relationship

There will also be a plenary panel answering questions from the audience, both by pre-event survey, and from the floor.

CMA and the CMA Standards Council can help train, develop and encourage your board towards greater effectiveness, and give you some support in meeting these responsibilities. So, we invite you to join us for a fun, inspiring and practical day. Over ten presenters and panellists, including Murray Baird (Assistant Commissioner, General Counsel of the ACNC) will guide you through the day.

*Member means paid CMA member. Board members of accredited CMA Standards Council Partners cost is $100
